When I start a painting, or any new creation, I rarely have a clear plan or design. Just a blank canvas staring back saying DO SOMETHING with me. I rely on some spontaneity, and/or request some help from a Muse or a symbolic deity when I need help to achieve a goal. This is probably the one thing that I do in my life that truly keeps me present. I take that back. There's yoga.

Recently I requested and utilized some symbolic energy from a resin figure I bought of the Hindu deity Lakshmi. She is the goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage, AND the embodiment of beauty, grace, and charm. Is that too much ask?

I started painted on my 8"x8" cradled wood canvas, incorporating an earlier unsold painting. I'm presently in the process in re-purposing. You can get DO OVERS in art.

I was off to a fairly decent start, so I thought.

As I continued, I was liking it less and less. With some more obsessive work, painting the recycled canvas again and adding some magenta flowers, I decided to end on this note:

Next stop, gathering up all my new creations to get professionally shot and posted on my website. Lakshmi, I'm depending on you. I have art to market and sell.

It's More Than Black and White

The reality of living an artist lifestyle is not easy. It definitely is a CHOICE, a calling, a passion and my goal. And by no means is it all black and white.

I am admittedly getting better at learning and doing what it takes to live an artist's life, albeit between a full time job. I continually surround myself with resources and tools to help me understand what is natural, normal and avoidable.

I constantly work with the truly gray, or I what I consider the real COLORFUL matter in between. (I have a great hair colorist for that other gray matter!!- truth's out now.) I embrace the emotional and financial highs; accept the business, emotional/ego and financial lows (kinda); sometimes/always compare myself to others; always admire, am inspired and learn from other artists; seek creative challenges and strive to work through my constraints and limitations to get me to level I want to achieve.

I work out of my apartment. With my limited space, I am surrounded by the sight of unsold box inventory. It is hard to look and not have it take on the appearance of failure and expense. On the plus side, I can see the wonderful progress I've made over the years and take advantage of what worked. I have the luxury of painting over all that work to create something new. That is precisely what I have done with the boxes shown on this post. I have also managed to finagle my way out of the box with my wall art and mixed media creations.

What definitely IS BLACK AND WHITE:

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Spend time alone every day.

When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

My Secret Word for 2012

Five days into the new year with my 2012 intentions practically ready to go, I decided I needed a word to hold and help me fulfill what I want to accomplish. I could keep it a secret but I thought otherwise. Ready? My secret word to help me personally, artistically and professionally in 2012 is PASSION. I want to really live it, feel it, see it,create it, read it and hear it. To think, last years posted word was vulnerability. Yep, I definitely want passion this year.

To help me launch my passion for 2012, AND fulfill a new goal of writing a new post every two weeks at the latest, I again refer to the Yo Yo Ma tribute performance from the Kennedy Center 2011 Honors. The inspiration I got and get from watching and listening to this particular eclectic gathering is a beautiful emotional high.

Every time I see or hear artists of any and every medium performing, enjoying and successfully living their passion, I grow a A LOT MORE INSPIRED, a bit more empowered and a tad more jealous- the constructive kind.

In this particular tribute performance, there are several genres of music-Classical, Bluegrass, Asian (Silk Road Project-a personal favorite), and Pop, many immensely talented and trained musicians of all ages and backgrounds, on one stage, displaying their infectious passion and reverence to an amazing individual. They love what they are doing, they connect with the music, each other and the audience. I wish the same for my work. Notice how the audience reacts and responds. An artist's dream:

Tis the Reason and Season

As 2011 comes to a close, my last post in this space is going to be somewhat of a hodge podge. The reason: this time of year is not one of my favorites. That said, I was not sure what to put in this space without being a killjoy. I finally decided on some music, some artistic self-promotion, a goal, and some inspiration to take into 2012.

And finally some inspiration and a bit of unsolicited advice. I've been reflecting on 2011 and putting together my goals and plans for 2012 (some new, some still to be met). Tis the season.

I was watching the 2011 Kennedy Center Honors on television this week, which I do every year, and was incredibly moved by every honoree and performing tribute. Artists are a beautiful species. One of this years honorees was cellist Yo Yo Ma. He can move, inspire and motivate with his music, passion, presence and words. There were two things he said in an interview that gave me the courage, comfort and reassuring "me too", "it's OKAY to feel this way", continue on the artistic path, along with a new resolution:

"I'm not brave. I'm actually pretty scared a lot of the time but I must like being scared because I keep doing things that scare me."

"Every day I make an effort to go toward what I don't understand."

Learning the Art to Staying Afloat

Every year Chicago kicks off the holiday season with the Magnificent Mile Festival of Lights Parade that goes down Michigan Avenue. I generally try to avoid this parade like the plague because it makes me feel very claustrophobic. It attracts soooooooooooo many people and it is near impossible to get anywhere, like home. This year I had a change of heart. Last Saturday I volunteered to be a participant as a balloon handler with some of my fellow coworkers. Can scratch that off my bucket list. Only 999 more to go.

Upon being introduced to The Nutcracker, I wasn't sure who was dreading this more, me or him. He was huge and required at least 12 people. From the looks of this behind the scenes prep picture, he was. I was getting a little nervous but excited. We were given instructions and had several rehearsal drills. Very fun.

We all reassured him it was going to be okay, buoyed this spirits, inflated his huge ego several times with more helium and carried him through until the end...literally. He was deflating from the waist down and had to be supported by fellow handlers from start to finish. I was off to the side of his right arm. I was able to use some of what I learned from sailing. We were hysterical the entire time and getting supportive and sympathetic cheers from the crowds.

We were on television and if you click here and fast forward up to 7 minutes you will see what I mean. Give it a moment to load. I am the third or fourth person on the left side of the screen with black pants & white gym shoes near 8-9 minutes. We were behind two American Idol singers and in case you were curious or had ANY doubts, they lip synched to their pre-recorded song and not very well I might add.

So what is the art to staying afloat? Especially this time of year. Is it A: uplifting drugs, B: laughing when things go awry, C: surrounding yourself with supportive, experienced people D: not taking things too seriously. You can answer that for yourself. :)

The entire behind the scenes parade process was so fun and interesting. I really did learn a lot. I am a much better participant than spectator for this parade. Now to apply that same approach to art shows.

After we crossed the finish line, we deflated what was left of The Nutcracker and headed off to the Fairmont Hotel for drinks. We earned it.

Thank you Bill and Babs for signing me up and for sharing some of your pictures! It was also great to laugh and be around coworkers outside of work-Sharma!! and Jeannette!! I would definitely do this again.

Seeing Red

No sooner had I heard these well intentioned words literally SHOUTED from a stage last month, a highly sensitive nerve was struck. So much that I started wiping away tears and said to myself Oh, actor portraying Mark Rothko, I know, I know, you're right, I know. Sob. Sigh. I must do that and will. This medium and this play was the message I needed and at that decibel too! I learned a lot from Red. (If you click on Red, you can see a little from youtube.)

With the holiday season officially here, and holiday shows in abundance on every scale, location and cost, I'm sitting this out unless a miracle happens. A sensitive and guilty issue, but a thought out business decision, nonetheless. My work does not do well at holiday shows unless I create other things that aren't all me. I've witnessed it. I was invited to participate in several church sponsored benefits again this year but I felt Jesus was getting the better deal. Please no offense. I didn't do as much research this year on shows as I could have and should have either as my work was still taking on it's new shape and colors.

When I think, feel and see the color Red, I want it to be passion, love, cheer, anger, laughing embarrassment, life and drive and less in the form of fear and debt. Maybe I can still find and eke out one or two venues that might be a good fit. I am continuing to paint my wall art like the new ones you see here and we shall see. I would love to see, feel and throw some green into the mix.

MORE Faves From SOFA CHICAGO 2011

Since I was close to maxing out my space and going into visual overload in my previous SOFA CHICAGO 2011 post, I decided to give two of my absolute favorites their own space and due. Of course, there was just a hint of Asian influence in my picks.

When I first entered the show, I immediately was drawn to a wood turning gallery/booth that had wood sculptures. They were all stunning but two especially caught my eye. They were by a Vietnamese /Active US artist by the name of Binh Pho. As I continued to walk the show, I saw even more of his work represented by other galleries/booths. IF ONLY I had an extra mid-4 figure$ to 5 figure$ to spare. His work is so gorgeous. Here are just a few more. This wasn't even everything. See how easy it is to get overloaded. I wouldn't mind just being loaded.

I was up close and admiring this next work when the artist came up to me, introduced herself and we started chatting away. My picture does not do this much justice but this was stunning too. The artist is Tanya Lyons and my other fave piece is titled Sasayaki (Whisper):

It was hard to narrow all my faves down but I did. I sure do know what I like. I do have great taste, so I've been told. I believe it.

SOFA Chicago 2011 and so INTUIT

Having just completed eight hospitable work days in row, I can't think of better way to spend part of my day to restore my inhospitable thoughts than at the SOFA (Sculptural Objects and Functional Art) and Intuit shows. I try to attend SOFA Chicago every year and this year was no exception. I love the art, the inspiration AND to torture myself with art I can't afford. This post runs a little long so be sure to click on Read More at the bottom.

There is always a lot to see at this show and it is easy to get overloaded. I MAY have to go back tomorrow. Functional art:

I have a few more faves but I'll leave that for another post. I left SOFA so I could deliver ONE of MY SOLD!! FAVES, Buddha with Rose Quartz. I was very excited because I know the owner and it's going to a great home.

I swear ART is one of the best antidotes after being around the public for long periods of time. So is selling art, especially when it's mine. But I refuse to allow myself to get a swelled head. OH, maybe just this once.

It's Only Temporary

It's nice to have outside influences to help reinforce and remind me that events and situations are temporary. Healthy, too. Those influences and reminders can come from anyone, anywhere, anything. For example, lets take a sacred ritual, a season, and a situation.

The Sacred Ritual: Last week I went to watch and hear the Tibetan Monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery recreate a mandala for Medicine and Healing, followed by some chanting. Mandalas are created whenever a need for healing of the environment and living beings is felt. No better time like the present!

The Mandala, Tibetan sand painting, is an ancient art form of Tibetan Buddhism. They are carefully constructed from dyed sand particles to represent the particular esoteric and textual traditions of Buddhism. It is a transient art form. Upon completion to symbolize the impermanence of all that exists, the colored sands are swept up and poured into a nearby river or stream where the waters carry healing energies throughout the world. Perhaps they chose Lake Michigan- it was pretty darn feisty (25 ft waves) while they were here. I was so engrossed watching them create this. I think I might have the patience for this, but on a very, very small scale. Just a temporary thought.

A Season: Today was the last day of the Farmers Market at the Museum of Contemporary Art. This is actually the last weekend for ALL farmers markets here. I tend to go to different markets for different items. I have my faves. There is one grower here, in my opinion, that grows the best honey crisp apples. I stocked up and hopefully that should keep the doctors away for longer than temporary. Until next year...a temporary.

Lastly, A Situation: Also today, I said a temporary good-bye to one my best friends in Chicago who had to leave today to go back to Brazil, where she is from, due to immigration policies. We all hope and believe it is temporary but that doesn't lessen the emotion behind it.

We stayed positive and hugged as we said good-bye outside her apartment. No tears allowed. Okay, some temporary tears then back to smiles.

RAW: The Magical Artistically Tour.. Part 2

In part 2 of RAW: the Magicial Artistically Tour, we'll go inside and I'll highlight some events that went on before, during and after the show from a personal perspective.

Before we do that a quick detour and digression: I have to begin this tour by saying how much I love being an artist-now. I am incredibly happy that I stuck with it after many many just "throw in the brush" and some semi-serious "give it up" conversations in my head. This venue, and my first show of the year, was the introduction of my new work and my voice in a public setting. Need to say, I have put the fire extinguisher on the "give up" dialogue and put the fire back in my belly instead. All from two days, and eighteen months preparation.

The show started at 11:00am. I arrived and set up early before some of the other artists to minimize the stress. I possessed the keys to the space! I'm glad I did. I had thought I would hang my work on brick having checked out my assigned space two days earlier. Change of plans the day of: didn't work and used the wall instead. It was much easier and I had more fun hanging the mixed media wall art than arranging and displaying boxes. I had a clearance/sale table for that:


The Director of HR of The James Hotel Chicago and Affinia Hotels and her husband came to say HI and check out my "other work." I was definitely surprised and most flattered.

Relaxed and excited I twas....until.... 25 minutes before showtime.....fellow first floor artist Pam Seatter and I looked and FINALLY ACCEPTED that the other two artists who were assigned the space upfront at the entrance were a no show. We couldn't leave this space barren. Who would even bother to come in?

The RAW #18 artists banded together and quickly. Second floor artist Miki Shim-Rutter of 2frogs ceramics brought down a small spare table to display all of our business cards at the entry. Pam and I started spreading out our work down the hallway along the barren walls.

Since I didn't live too far away and had extra unsold paintings (imagine that!) at my apartment, second floor beaded jewelry artist Annette Jackson drove very quickly so I could get them. Another digression but amusing: On the way there, Annette and I were talking about all sorts of interesting things, when I realized and interjected "BTW, my name is Marilyn." I had no idea what her name was either as we were definitely on a mission. We laughed so hard, she told me hers, continued our conversation and made it back in 20 minutes.

As the day progressed, with a great traffic flow, some sales and stellar feedback, I observed these two women from the sideline. They were smiling, giggling and admiring my whim(sical) art. I was eating it up.

Linda Conway, on the right, saw me and asked me if I was the artist? YES! They thought so and she bought my Outsider Art piece:

A show is not complete without having the support and appearance of DEAR friends, personal artist heroes, and coworkers past and present, showing up. Metal sculptor/welder artist, humorist and spirit raiser Jennifer Meyers (I introduced you to her an earlier post), drove two hours to see and support me. She relieved me so I could take a break and sold a box for me in my absence. I was tempted not to come back. BUT I DID.

I'll let you decide which side of Jennifer is more photogenic. At least she has one.

This post is a long one and I don't want it to take on a sappier tone which it is starting to do. It is also giving me lots and lots of font problems-true to form. Frustrating. Where's the magic now?

SOOOOOOO with Part 2 of the RAW 2011 Magical Artistically Tour coming to an end, I will close by personally speaking, this show was magic. My fears and doubts disappeared from all the great response and reaction to my new work. I am no longer working in the dark. I am starting to see my audience. I still have one fear however to overcome:

RAW: The Magical Artistically Tour.. Part 1

By now, you must know that I participated in the 10th Annual Ravenswood Artwalk this past weekend. Where were you if you didn't? Not to worry. I will share some visuals in Part 1 and some personal experiences in Part 2.

Let's begin with the recommended first stop: The Central Gallery. This is where some of the 200 participating artists could showcase one piece of work along with their show location and other details.

Along the Ravenswood corridors and side streets, every venue was marked by a flag and number. Maps were provided listing all locations, artists, businesses, entertainment - indoor and out. Trolleys were also available to help get around.

Continuing up the corridor, we arrive at my location (side view):

This building is mostly occupied by businesses not artist studios. We displayed our work in the hallways on the first and second floors. I shared this space with wonderfully talented, fun, friendly and unselfish artists. A great team and spirit we were and are. That in Part 2.

Here are just a few of them. I apologize. I thought I had captured everyone and realized I didn't. I shared the first floor with oil painter Pamela Seatter.

There was sooo much to this show that I didn't see or capture. I was definitely all participant and less spectator. As it should be. I was excited to have my new work and mixed media identity out there and receive such GREAT feedback and response. Yes, there were sales. It felt really, really good.

Write of Artistic Passage

When I applied last year to the Ravenswood Artwalk, I did so with several "goals/objectives" in mind. I wanted, and honestly needed, more show experience. After taking an 18 month hiatus to find and connect to a new voice, challenge my artistic ability and emerge, RAW was the perfect venue for me. A wonderful and gracious artist community, it presented itself at the right time as did their acceptance into it. I had no idea the full impact or after effect doing RAW would have on me until now, a year later.

This show raised the bar for me. It gave me my new direction, a personal and competitive challenge, focus and clarity. It rewarded me on many levels. I had to get rid of the mental and physical clutter first. Doing so has made me a tad calmer, more determined and a tad more confident. (I say that now. Wait until my next show.)

Homage to Outsider Art and Other Stuff

Ever since I decided to go from painting boxes to wall art, I've been going through all kinds of liberating stuff - inside and out. I am, for all in tense (well, this process can be intense ) and purposes, a self-taught artist. Translation: not degreed in Art. To confidently and comfortably reinvent and call myself an "artist" took time and much appreciated acceptance and validation. A work in progress...still.

One of the styles of art that has helped me grow and liberate me is Outsider Art. I relate to the name alone. I have always had an attraction and appreciation for Outsider Art. The creators of outsider art just create. They feel and may hear things, perhaps of a religious or political order. They are not caught up in perfection or so it appears (like someone I know.) They re-purpose and recycle. There can be poor grammar and misspelled words. But Outsider artists have purity of intentions.

Last year I went to see the Stranger in Paradise exhibit (3x) which highlighted the works the late Reverend Howard Finster and even more recently the Outsider/Folk Art exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum two weeks ago. (I have links that describe Outsider Art and the works of Rev. Howard Finster, so please look.) Both exhibits opened me up.

In my quest to free my creativity up and loosen up on the perfectionism, I'm enjoying some of the qualities of an Outsider artist:

This is a work in progress. The finished version will be on my website next week. I cluttered it up a bit with more writing.

And in less than two weeks, I will be participating once again in the Ravenswood Artwalk.
A show!!! An indoor show!!! :))))) I am preparing for that now. You might just see some of my Outsider influenced art there. More on that next time.

One Day+One Exhibit=Happy

I took a replenish, "get outta here" and inspire "me" day yesterday to go to the Milwaukee Art Museum to see The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City exhibit. Need I remind you how much I love Asian art, furnishings and artifacts? I needed a drool cup viewing this exhibit. I was blown away.

It featured art, murals, objects, furnishings, all made with exquisite beauty and craftsmanship, from Qianlong Garden. This was a secluded compound of pavilions and gardens the Qianlong emperor designed in the 18th century in anticipation of his retirement. Lots of Buddhist shrines and some videos. This was the third and final stop in the world before these treasured artworks are returned to China. I made it just in time.

No photos of the exhibit were allowed but I'll share what I could from this exhibit and then some other things.

But what I can visually share is the calm, serenity and magnificence of this museum. This was my first time here, ashamedly. It is a gorgeous museum architecturally with a fantastic art collection along the lakefront. Just what I needed.

After China, I went to see all the other exhibits/collections. Paid my respect to Picasso, O'Keefe, Leger + many more, and then an extraordinary thing happened. Roy Lichtenstein called me over to one of his Pop art paintings and he spoke to me. He said "kid (beats Ma'am), I know how much you love art, want to make it as an artist, so how would you like to be in one of mine? (Really? Ya talkin' to me?) See what it is like to have your work in a museum." So I took him up on it and got several shots. Hard to do trying not to look at the camera when taking a shot. Here's one:

It was such a great day. I learned a lot, made a new "friend," and tried to write a shorter, less cluttered post. Four hours to go until September.

August is officially a wrap and so is my short time off. Back to work tomorrow.

Finding Even More Happy In August

I scheduled some much needed time off from work starting today, Saturday, August 27. I mention that because I don't know if I'll finish this post tonight so I want to be honest about my "today." Having just returned from my today, let me tell you it made me more than happy. It made me blissful and blessed.

I chose to start my day attending two of my favorite farmers' markets, greencity Market and another on Division Street, both I now miss due to my weekend schedule. It's a see-good, smell-good, hear-good, feel-good and TASTE good festival. A healthy high.

I bought basil, tomatoes, blueberries, parsley, peppers and honey. I've finally learned to discipline myself at the market because so much of what I would buy ended up getting wasted and pitched. Money doesn't grow on trees or in the ground unfortunately :(

On to another festival: the Bucktown Arts Fest. It is a good show, quite competitive to get into, tried twice unsuccessfully several years ago. I had a mission/intention going to this show. I have not attended many this summer and was feeling it. I felt the need to be around and connect with other artists - those brave souls doing an outdoor show- for inspiration and kindred-ship (is that even a word?)

First stop, one of my favorite artists/heroes, Anne Leuck Feldhaus as she was literally wrapping up a sale! She was unaware that this was even taken. I never want to intrude on any artist at a show with a camera. I bought a small painting.

Another artist/hero , who I recently wrote about, is Melissa Banks. She was also unaware that I took this. But I wanted to visually introduce you to her and her phenomenal jewelry since I didn't before.

And then there is Jennifer Meyers, sistersan, a beautiful and phenomenal sculptor and welder of recycled materials. We met three years ago doing an Architectural Artifacts Holiday show and she is one of the greatest gifts to enter my life from that show. She is richly soulful, spiritual, wise and ridiculously funny. I haven't seen Jen for two years? but we are so connected that the physical didn't matter. Seeing her after this lapse of time was the best! She knew her picture was being taken and didn't want it. She was exhausted from the preparation for this show. I begged. :)

Talking to her for some time at the show was empowering, touching and emotional for me. We never truly know the impact we have on other peoples lives, be it from our art or being, until your hear or read their words directly. I am so grateful I got to hear those words and take home a piece of her art as well.

As I mentioned before, this was a spectacular day. Not only did I reconnect with my simple pleasures, I reconnected with the art community and myself!

I deliberately took a lot of tent shots of the farmers' markets and art fair for which I spared you. One of my process steps for getting over my outdoor show issues. After spending time there today (the real today), I am definitely going to give Bucktown another shot next year. I have a lot of work ahead of me but after this day in August, I know I want it. The ground has been set - mentally at least.

Make Room For Clutter

ClutterClutterClutter. I'm surrounded by it at home. Not a source of comfort. Au contrare. However when used creatively, which I am in the process of doing, it can be a source of inspiration.... a new work in progress - mixed media graffiti style painting. It's suffocating just doing it.

In a recent blog post written by Los Angeles artist and Feng Shui consultant Anita Rosenberg, whose entire body of work and life I admire and am awed by, she wrote about the function of clutter. We could all be far more productive by getting rid of the some subtle and blatant clutter of home and surroundings. It really says a lot about us as an individual and what is going in "inside." It could not be more timely. It is wonderful and I would like to share it with you:

Clutter has no geographic boundaries. You have to make them. I am aware of the impact it can have on every aspect of my life. I see it, feel it, think it, hear it, live it. I don't even want to imagine what it would taste like. On rare occasions, you can be inspired by it.

I titled this post Make Room For Clutter when in reality it should be Let's Not. For now, I'll finish cluttering up my painting, hence making room for clutter,and really try de-cluttering my home and mind. I am inspired by and making room for both.

Finding The Happy In August

If I could eliminate one month out of the year, like the 13th floor of a highrise, it would be the month of August. I would still acknowledge and wish all the people I know with August birthdays a Happy Birthday. It just wouldn't be on my personal calendar. I don't know exactly what it is about August that always gives me so much angst. Don't even get me started politically.

In times like these, I gotta find the happy. It's a process:

I reworked and consolidated these stoneware faces from Terra Cottage that I had for eight years and put them on one painted wood panel. Photo did not come out well but I like them and they're fun.

I actually am still on a high from this. Sir Paul and I share the same birthday- June 18th. Other than that.....

I'm not exactly sure IF this would this help me with August. Shows perhaps? I've been a spectator and not a participant with this one. The people doing it seem to be happy. It looks likes fun. Moving on....

I actually have been a participant in this one in the past and almost got certified before I got sick from ingesting dirty Lake Michigan harbor water. I have to start all over again. Art has taken over for now. Alas, I am a spectator until I ingratiate or find my way onto someone's boat. This does make me happy seeing the sailboats on the lake and in the harbor.

What REALLY makes me happy in August so far is seeing my new work in Flourish Studios. I love that I am starting over in a place called Flourish!

I dropped off a few mixed media pieces and bangles last Monday and they were on the floor when I stopped by briefly Friday night for an event. This is not the final display but they wanted to get them out and I am very happy. I will write more about them in a future post. Talk about a feel good place!

I am waiting to hear about getting in a gallery soon and working on new pieces and prospects. There are only sixteen days left in August. A lot can still happen so I'll just keep trying to find the happy.

Why Don't I Do More Shows, You Ask?

One of the many things I absolutely love about being an artist is getting in my safe, secluded creative bubble and creating out of my comfort zone. It doesn't take long before that particular creative bubble is maxed out, along with some finances, when the itch and necessity to venture out, face the public and Internet with my art takes hold. Yep, don my marketing and selling hat and get to the real work. Beret, fascinator, stetson, hard hat, your fashionable choice.

Art fairs and shows are a natural and necessary vehicle for artists to show and SELL their work. Indoor and outdoor. It is the best way to interact and connect with the public one on one, artistically and professionally. You can get verbal and non-verbal feedback about your work, SELL IT direct and build a customer base.

Now that I officially declared my new artistic style as mixed media from functional, it is time to get this new work out there and sell it. No holds barred. It is Show time!

Except.....I have a fear of doing shows and some excuses for not doing them. Let's rattle off three fears: financial-recouping my booth and expenses and not selling my work or enough of it; emotional-EGO/rejection; and physical - I don't own a car and limited residential space to store a tent. I actually sold my new tent several years ago after only two shows to a macro green farmer for farmers' markets in Wisconsin. I have indoor and outdoor show experience so I do know of which I speak. Outdoor leaves me traumatized.

Artists put their heart and souls into their creations and most of all COURAGE into their shows. There is an investment on EVERY LEVEL and I admire and respect their courage for making the haul and going the full distance(s). I'll have what they're having :).

Let me share one example of an extraordinary artist profile in courage and another one of my personal artist heroes, Melissa Banks of Rapt In Maille. She is a full time WORKING (and oh does she) artist and designer of chain maille jewelry and does lots and lots of shows. She posted a recent outdoor experience at the Ann Arbor 2011 show on her blog that left me gasping. I want you to read it too. Perhaps you will gain an ever greater appreciation and insight of and for an artist's show life. Why do they do this?

I would love to again possess what it takes to do what she and every outdoor artist in particular does. I suppose I will some day. I certainly have a reason to do more shows- New Mixed Media creations and old excuses to go with them.

Thank goodness for the artists who help, instruct, inspire, lead, share and are honest with what is it truly like doing shows- Retail, Wholesale, Indoor and/or Outdoor. They are the pioneers and models for me to again GET OVER IT!

Recent read: Ceramic artist Eva Zeisel is 104 years old and still making art. She is introducing a new line of lamps and when recently asked in the WSJ:

Q: What do you want to achieve with your new lamps?
A: I want to sell them.

Ms. Zeisel, that's all I want to do with my new art. Did you do shows? If so, how long did it take to get over the fear?

Mixed Media in Motion

I know it takes time for new sources of creative energy to find their way and take hold. That hasn't stopped me from continually getting impatient and frustrated with my creative process and progress. Juggling a full time job with full time artistic aspirations, dreams, and goals leaves my head spinning. It also produces wasted energy, frustration, and delays.

Going through Indiana recently on my way back to Chicago, there are several fields of wind turbines. If you've ever driven through Indiana there isn't too much to look at. It's boring. As a passenger and not a driver, I was observing these supreme functional art sculptures in simplistic and powerful motion. I started thinking about ways I can change my thinking and approach. The answer my friend was blowing in the wind.

Two ways to officially change an approach is to alter a word and modify a font. And last week I did just that. I went from being "Functional" Creations to "Mixed Media" Creations. You can see it at the top of this blog, on my website and business cards. Mixed Media is so much easier to describe than functional, believe it or not, which saves energy in the selling and marketing process.

Like turbines, it is going to take time and far more effort on my part for my new found mixed media creative happiness to catch on. Naturally. Organically. Creatively. It is also going to require me to get over some of my show issues, and do more shows. That will be the focus of my next blog post.

Taking Advantage of the Summer

There is something about Summer that necessitates finding the perfect imbalance between work and pleasure. Because of that, I am taking this moment to tip the scales more on the side of pleasure. It's best to take advantage of it because Summer goes by so quickly. I have workaholic tendencies.

So for the sake of imbalance and me, I write another even more Randomly Speaking post:

One of my favorite things to do is to go to Ravinia Park to hear outdoor concerts and picnic on the lawn. The scenery is so peaceful and serene. I went this past Friday night to hear the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the weather was perfect:

Since my dearest friend Tereza and I both got off from our respective jobs early, we chose to arrive soon after the park opened to the public @ 5:30. This allowed us to secure a nice location, relax, take in the sights and scenery and just unwind. Concert started at 8:00.

I picked up some "easy to transport" food. Some might find some of this kinda boring. I eat very healthy 98% of the time. Not shown, the wine and ice cream. We're gonna need it. Trust me.

As I mentioned, one of the advantages of arriving early is to secure your spot. Once you do, it is easy to become somewhat territorial with your space and surroundings. Twenty minutes after we had staked our claim, this couple decides to position themselves a yard (literally) away from us. SERIOUSLY???? A few feet more and we wouldn't have felt intruded upon. But it was still so early and the park had LOTS of wide open space yearning to be occupied. This gets better or worse depending on your perspective. Soon after and straight ahead, this:

Not exactly the "takin' in the scenery" I had in mind. At this juncture, Tereza and I are looking at each other and around at all our too close for comfort neighbors in disbelief. REALLY??? This close??? I get my camera, seeing material for this blog in the making, and all the while laughing so hard it hurt. Great for the abs, btw. Tears were rolling down my face, unfortunately not blinding enough that I could still see the sight ahead. I'm laughing now trying to I write this.

Tereza between disbelief and laughing too! We decided to strategically place bags around our area so the plumber shot was partially obscured. It depended on whether you sat up or reclined. Anyway, the concert was spectacular.
It was fun.

Next: The DuSable Museum held an African Fine Arts and Craft Fair yesterday. I love African art in addition to Asian and Eastern. I went after work for some new ideas and influences and to see if anything called out to me. It didn't.

Summer Reading: Snow Flower and Secret Fan by Lisa See; next: The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Nothing like reading before the movies come out!

Full Circle and Down the Pike

My new website is up. Five simple and joyous words that took only 5 seconds to type. The website, on the other hand, took eighteen months of arduous mental preparation and five months physical preparation.

The leap right now for me is putting (okay..allowing) more of Me and my personal influences into my work. It may, and most likely will, draw a different audience than some of my prior work. I don't know for sure. I have to market the "new" and see what happens.

My "plans" are to create more wall art, jewelry and keep a few of the boxes. I'm leaving flex room for different creations down the pike.

Letting Go Of Unsold Art

You are probably asking yourself WHAT IS THIS and what purpose does this serve? I wasn't sure myself at initial glance when I saw it last weekend at the Artropolis show at the Chicago Merchandise Mart. As an artist and someone who appreciates art and shows, and for every artist who is making or trying to make a living from their art and passion, this pile actually says alot. Keep reading and you'll understand.

Artropolis is three shows in one: Art Chicago, NEXT and Antiques. Art Chicago is an international fair of Contemporary and Modern Art while NEXT is an invitational exhibition of emerging art. This exhibit/booth in question was located in the NEXT section. (Personal note: I enjoyed Art Chicago but I enjoyed the NEXT portion more.)

At first glance, I was curious, lured, and a wee cynical until I started observing and talking to the artists in this booth. It was mixed media art, performance art, and passionate causal sales pitches all rolled into one. Some of the proceeds from the sold art were going to be donated to PAWS. The more I watched and listened, I got it and it got to me. How long should you hold onto your work if it hasn't sold?

I have earlier work and painted boxes I would love to get rid of as they take up valued space. I would also love/need to sell my new work. (Another personal note: New website is almost done and you will be able to buy from it!) It is so easy to hold on and get attached to your pieces: Personal favorites that haven't sold with the hope they still might; or hold on to see the progress and evolution made. Ha, I sure have improved since 1998. When you take into account the material expenses, time, labor, EGO, rejection, and space it takes up mentally and physically, what are you left with? A sentence ending in a preposition -a no-no.

Should it be preserved, rescued or meet a violent death in front of an audience? You may be able to see alot of picture hooks that once held paintings. Some were sold. There were a few red dots. Many others not. The pile at the top of this post were some of the ones that didn't. This was only a few hours of a 4 day show. Can you imagine? I don't want to.

To all the art collectors: If you connect with a piece of art and can afford it, please buy it. Please don't stand idly by. Time may be running out and it just might not be around. Hopefully it SOLD and has good home.

I'm still undecided how I will let go of unsold work and set up a time line. I do need to let go though, that's for sure. I will recycle and re-purpose when I can.

One last side note: The pile of unsold paintings gets recycled by the artist.

Artists Who Thrive. What a concept! It's definitely a personal aspiration. In real and virtual reality, it is more than a concept. It is a resourceful website and Facebook page that helps artists effectively market and sell their art. I LIKE them on FB. And it inspires me. I welcome any and all assistance to grow and remove obstacles in my path.

I have this in the entry of my apartment. My dabble with a recycled shelf I had, mosaic glass tiles, acrylic paint.
The photo doesn't do it justice. Shot it my laundry room. Clean though.

I have not been feeling the artist "thrive." Just the opposite. I am behind in fulfilling the things I said I was "expecting" and said to have done by now. Website, new work created, shot, and MARKETING. I'll share a little well known secret about "expectations": DON'T HAVE THEM. For those who know me and those who don't: yes, I can be very hard on myself.

According to an extensive 2010 survey commissioned by Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) and posted on a recent ArtistsWhoThrive FB page, I came across two statistical findings that gave me a sense of belonging and made me feel less like an "outsider" artist:

Seven in 10 artists hold at least one job in addition to making art.

I have a full time job with a schedule that changes weekly. Last year I had two jobs in addition to making art. That didn't last too long. Hooray.

"Artists who earn less than 21% of their income from their artwork are the least likely to market themselves in any way."

Since my art is changing from what I have done in the past, I haven't done much marketing this year or last. There's the 21. It has taken time for me to fully emerge and solidify. I do have a photo shoot scheduled for next week. A professional one! And there has been offline work on the new website.

As for 711510, that’s the IRS code for full time artists. The ultimate number I aspire to and fantasize about, but don't expect soon.

Whatever, I plan and will continue to be an artist who thrives. That means continue having a full time job, working at creating and marketing new work, and try to control font size when I can (having lots of trouble with this post for some reason -hrumph.) It is a numbers game (and software) and I'm in regardless.

When I paint, write, ponder my process, or sulk, I tend to have music, television or silence in the background. Lately, I have been pooling more from Ted.com. I find motivation, insight, inspiration from these lectures. I am indulging and sharing one more, even if I do feel quite the slacker compared to Indian artist Raghava KK. It's not always healthy to compare yourself to others. In this case, it's SOOOO true. After this TED in this space, it's back to sharing my new creations. Have more work to do on them before then but getting close.

For me, its the power of his passion, cockiness, confidence, reinvention, enthusiasm, talent, vulnerability, honesty and humor that is SO INFECTIOUS. I have admirable envy. Isn't he Wonderful!!!

I traveled light to my recent photo shoot due to weather and concentrated on bracelets only. There's more to show,title, price, and get out there. Next shoot will focus on canvas-more to do and paint in that department. But it's coming!!!

2011: Ah, To Be Flexible

I was so excited when 2011 rolled in as I had my goals, plans and deadlines written down and implementation had begun. Photo shoot scheduled (and still is) -check, registered to begin 5-week ceramics class at Lillstreet in February-check, attend RAWednesdays artist seminars-check, create 2-3 new pieces a week for photo shoot-um, write a new post for the new year-um, attend more yoga classes -I was- and a few other things in other areas of my life. Yes, 2011 started to look and feel great. I was going to make myself more open and more vulnerable. By golly, I was focused,ambitious and things were falling into place.

What I had not planned was developing a rash that spread and made me very nervous and uncomfortable. I thought it was an allergic reaction to a soap or detergent or something I was using. Went to the doctor to find it was a non-contagious, non-threatening virus,would take a while to get out of my system and there was nothing to do except use hydrocortisone cream along with the my already mega doses of benadryl. Also used more omega oils for healing and raw food. All I'll say is that I felt and looked like a leper. EEEUUWWW. A characteristic of the rash is that it only is on the torso and back and arms and the name of it begins with "pity." I was so distracted by this and felt more pity and less creative. (As of this post, it is all gone :D)

Last week, I accidentally slipped and fell on a wet hardwood floor and tore my hamstring muscle leaving me all eggplant colored (another major EEEEUUWWW) and incredibly sore on my left leg. The knowledge I have gained from yoga over the years helped me so much that I immediately knew what I did and what to do. I almost cried but I didn't. I already had enough "pity" in my system. Two days ago, I lovingly and willingly went to Cincinnati to see my elderly father and help relocate him to a new unit in his FANTASTIC senior living community. An extraordinary love filled and sensitive visit. It went VERY well.

So what I am getting at, as ambitious and excited to get things rolling for the new year,

I am a little behind with my plans. Interference and distractions happen. I have to be flexible so my body and some emotions can heal.

I am writing this so I do have a January 2011 post. Deadline met! I also said I was going to be more open and vulnerable. Not exactly the way I wanted to start the new year but hey....I'm flexible.

Very soon I'll have new work to show!!!! I'll keep you posted.

My New Voice for 2011

I've started putting together my list of goals and to-do's (I'll call them "ta-da's") for 2011. In the process, I just happened? to find the lecture below by Brene Brown on TED. I've watched this several times. It touched a few emotional chords. I truly want to go into no-hold back, new territory mode to grow artistically, emotionally, personally and professionally next year. To do that I have recognized: The Power of VULNERABILITY.

So my 2011 voice has verbs and nouns and enough to get me going:

V: Vulnerable, Visual, Verbalize

O: Originality, Organize, Openness, Overtures

I: Innovate, Initiate,Inspire, Internalize, Imperfection

C: Communicate, Create, Collaborate, Courage, Connection, Compassion

E: Embrace, Energize, Expose, Expand, Excite, Externalize, Express

Like an onion, I'll peel back some uncomfortable layers, maybe shed a tear or two, let go and allow myself to be a tad more vulnerable. Going from RAW to Absolutely FAB

Last week I had "planned" to attend a jazz concert at Orchestra Hall to hear Regina Carter and Esperanza Spalding. Two days before the concert I was presented with an opportunity to participate with several other artists from the Ravenswood Artwalk (RAW) and Blackbird Gallery in free studio space in the Fine Arts Building (FAB) for their open holiday show throughout the entire building.

A little background: The Fine Arts Building houses all the arts: writers, painters, musicians, dancers and vocal instructors. It is a landmark building and culturally rich.

To sum up this evening, it was FABulous!! I sold a lot of my work. It was so well received and appreciated. Even if people did not buy anything, the compliments and exposure was worth it and VERY validating. This venue proved even more to me how environment influences how art is received and perceived. On a lower note, my beverage of the late evening was wine and the photo of me was not very flattering. So sans photo.

So what's next.. The new ideas for my website are in place. I'm working on taking my art to another level and wherever these winding stairs take me. I won't make a lot of plans.

I began this year disillusioned, disconnected and somewhat defeated when it came to my art and creativity. Eleven months later, having worked through some of my creative blocks and mental limitations, I am letting loose and saying "Get me outta of the box!"

I am less afraid now to have more of me reflected in my work. Less projection and doubt of will it sell before I even get it out there, which I do, and why I have a tendency to hold on to some of my work. It will require different and more marketing and experimentation as I change my direction. If not, I will continue feeling bored, stale and stagnate. So, I have my artistic voice. I'll find my audience. I'm working on ideas and changes to my website.

Some totally random thoughts and musings I wrote to get to this level of liberation:

With age comes..um... more age.

As I clean my apartment, I remind myself to collect more experiences and less "things."

Magic word today is Boundary. There is joy to be had in setting boundaries.

It also took yoga, music, artists, books, a new job, a Shamanic healer/reader, and photographer Jeff Phillips of Crowdspotting, who took the picture of me that you see above along with some others, during the Ravenswood Art Walk show. There was some playtime to be had :( He gave me creative license to play with the pictures. Hence,the box. See, I am a multidimensional person!

Thinking and working outside the artistic box takes time, patience, internal and external help. And yes, Georgia, courage indeed.

Very Into SOFA Chicago and Intuit Show 2010

Below are just a few of my personal favorites from this year's 17th Annual SOFA Chicago and new Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art. I love going to this show every year for the art, getting display ideas, observing attendees and their enviable fashion and style, talking to and appreciating the graciousness of the artists and gallery owners, and being in the safety zone since I can't afford to buy. It hurts, but I usually go into this show with the looky but no buyee discipline. These tend to be higher end collector pieces. Must invest in me! is my mantra.

More Randomly Speaking....

Keeping it light, short, and sweet. Exhausted from lots of work hours, anxious and exhausted from the recent election. Seeing (and feeling!!) lots of red and feeling terribly blue :( from most of the results. So I bought some essential oils to spritz and smell and re-energize. Lots of art and exercise will follow today and this weekend after this gets posted.
Right now, I am finding some comfort and peace in other people's words. Hope you do too!

And How Do You Take Your Art- Fine or Craft?

When you don't enjoy making the art you once did, don't like having unfinished or unsold box inventory around, can't succinctly sell it, and/or you lost some or all of your artistic passion, sage advice is take a break. All signs point to a new direction and a new approach. I am now appreciating and seeing the importance of taking my uncomfortable hiatus from making and marketing art this year. Thinking and working outside the box literally applies to me.

Served as a great ego boost. It still does.

Doing the recent Ravenswood Artwalk and the OOAK in 2007 & 2008 challenged me. It raised the bar for me emotionally, artistically, and creatively. It also left me soul searching as to what kind of artist I am, am I really?, and what I want to be. A TBD identity label or classification does not lend itself to effective marketing.

That's where the hiatus and doing RAW helped. It allowed me to create and introduce new work and ideas in a new setting. As a result, I feel more excited about my work. I have a bit more clarity, creative freedom and a renewed commitment. Attending the wrap party and listening to show and artist feedback also helped me to define my next steps. I'll still be functional but with a twist.

Frankly, I do not see myself as a Fine artist. Very beautiful, trained and disciplined like ballet. Instead, I do see myself continuing to create mixed media,colorful, eclectic, inspirational pieces but less crafty. A modern dance, which is more free flowing, less restricting. I'd like to hone my craft with less "craft." It will also guide me as to what future shows I apply to and where I best fit.

Last week, I went to an artist workshop to help with the "elevator" speech. We began by someone demonstrating and teaching us how to juggle, which indeed is an art with 3 or more balls.The workshop was okay. It reminded me how important it is to continue looking up. And take a break.

Our first stop: the Central Gallery. Participating artists had the option of showcasing a piece of their work which allowed attendees to preview work in a gallery setting. The artist's name, medium and venue location were provided. I did and the gallery setting was an absolute high for me.

With this show now over and under my belt, I am beginning to feel empowered again. My strengths were reinforced as were some weaknesses. It all comes back. I definitely know what needs work. The big question: What kind of artist do I want to be? I'll continue to work at it, mix things up a bit, experiment, network,surround myself with fantastic people, and just get out there.

Display Your Art, Not Your Insecurity

I went to check my booth location yesterday for the Ravenswood Artwalk after receiving my show packet and promotional material. Hate going into these events blind. Did I mention it is October 2 & 3 from 11:00am-5:00? Oh, no worries. I will post at least one or two more times with details! I'm on a side street, not the main corridor :(, but actually it is pretty good. Spacious studio, lots of windows, brick and dry walls, and hardwood floors.

I am ecstatic about participating in this show and getting back out there. Well.... that was until my booth display insecurity resurfaced. BIG TIME. Displays are not my strong suit. Seeing this space put me in creative overdrive. Not in a good way. I still have some time to figure things out before I totally wig out. I need to de-stress over the display. What shall I do? What shall I do?

Twenty-four hours later....

With little sleep, some comic relief and sore hands, I had an idea of what I wanted. After work, I went to several thrift stores,Target and Home Depot and eventually found a great shelving unit that will break down easily and showcase my work much better. I knew it was the right thing to do rather than getting another table even though I wasn't excited about the investment. The prospect of not selling anything is worse. The studio wall space allows me to showcase my paintings since I can hang them on the wall or brick. I'll see which works better. Personally, I like the brick. Whatever, I'm inspired and hands down, it will BE AMAZING.

I am getting ready to do my first show of the year, the Ravenswood ArtWalk, Oct 2 & 3 to be precise. Nothing like a healthy deadline to get motivated. Since taking some uncomfortable time off to reorganize and regroup (which I documented ad nauseum and believe I'm through,) I now have some new work to show and much in progress. I am seriously excited. Just need to get them professionally shot!! Really, Seriously. These are much better in person.

Exactly one year ago, I was in the mindset and ready to move to Portland, Oregon. I visited for a week to see if it was my new beginning. I had mentally left Chicago way before that and felt I was just biding time here physically until the time and location felt right. Portland turned out not to be my "it" city. I loved so much of it but in time realized just not enough to move and completely start over.

I took the time, made the essential changes I needed to and made some decisions... like to stay in Chicago. The love/hate relationship I've had with Chicago over the years has transformed where I am once again feeling love, reconnection and support from and for this city. Since my change in attitude (always helps,) I am engaging and becoming even more involved in the art community here. That feels really good.

I think that will now begin to reflect in my art and the business of my art. I've reined in my scattered energy. I'm attending workshops, exhibits, lectures, experimenting with new materials, taking greater advantage of the vast resources here, and am more comfortable calling myself "artist."

It Takes Nature to Nurture....Seriously Part 2

I actually have been serious this past month. I am walking my talk and reconnecting with my passion and Muse. I've been working on new paintings, experimenting, weaning some of the boxes, and shooting some new experimental (arty) profile shots. More to come, more to do but it is a new start. Seriously.

One of the steps I took to reconnect was to go to the Chicago Botanical Gardens, specifically the Japanese Gardens. I fell in love with them in Portland, OR and here. Here is a lot closer. Before I visually take you on this personal path, I have to buy a vowel. Yoo-hoo, Vanna. They let me in anyway. It helps to have the right connections or good karma.
My path so far this year has been interesting, frustrating, exciting, doubtful, and rewarding....in terms of personal and artistic growth.

Nothing linear about it:

I worked through my fears and doubts and made my decision to continue on my chosen path. Just needed to cross some mental hurdles and blocks, take a hiatus and make new connections.

It's time to take the business of my art of seriously. I feel and have felt like I am losing credibility with myself, family and probably others since January 1. I think the word "hobby," which is seriously not bad and "presently" true for me, really did a number on my head. Having just written this, I know so. I genuinely want to put the FUN back in the functional art I create.

I have stymied updates to my website, Facebook, esty, blog, marketing to brick & mortar stores...you name it. I need new photographs professionally shot for posting, shows and marketing. I do have a show coming up in October (and hopefully more) and a nice order due.

I have literally had a blocking, or tightening sensation in my throat because I have been creating less. It happens from time to time. Seriously. If you know chakras, this area, or fifth chakra, reflects the energy of self-expression. Believe it and listen when your any part of your body tries to tell you something or needs to be released. Verbally, physically, emotionally, ARTISTICALLY...

I haven't been ALL that serious because I still laugh, smile and maintain perspective between chokes. I've have been taking Chekov's advice and working on my life- new job and social life. That is what summer is about. Summer, like life, can be too short.

With my fifth chakra officially now open, I declare myself beginning anew,"UP" and ready to get down to business - making and marketing art. Unleash new ideas. Move on to NEW blog themes. Reconnect and recommit to my Muse. Have new pictures to show. Seriously.

Working the Net: A Visualization Process

Rather than getting continually flustered, frustrated and overwhelmed in my quest to learn how to effectively network and market online, I decided to visualize a new approach. A more relaxed and productive one- technically and mentally speaking. Using personal images from a past trip and 4 unsuspecting bracelets, I shall illustrate:

So what steps do I take...besides patience?

I keep an mind open. Purge outdated thoughts and attitudes with more productive ones. Get more mental RAM as a result! Continue to seek, research, read, apply and utilize the vast online, and APPROPRIATE resources that are available. Allow for and enjoy the learning curve. Networking and marketing decisions are not always easy nor are they always black and white. There are factors to take in consideration. For instance, these wonderful bracelets come in an array of colors, styles and textures.

More Randomly Speaking....Defining Moment

Time again for Randomly Speaking....random things I've read, seen or heard that inspires and helps me (and hopefully you!) in the artistic process.

I love it when I read or find something that identifies and expresses exactly what I am feeling when I am at a loss. What's my problem? AHA .....I just read it. I found it the June issue of Art Calendar.

I have expressed being in an unsettling creative funk and ebb of artistic motivation over these past weeks. After reading several hitting close to my mental home articles in the June issue of Art Calendar, I am no longer at a loss. I can definitely see and say part of my creative paralysis stemmed from trying to create work based on WOULD this sell ( I dunno), do I think this would SELL, who would buy this, rather than just creating for ME. A little self-censorship. I am also guilty of occasionally defining my success based solely on sales. A change of thought process is due and in effect.

Thanks to a profile about featured artist Melissa Peck, I read and recognized my problem. Nothing random at all. It was all there. A few highlighted quotes from this fantastic article:

If you could HEAR a painting....what would you see?

I think it is safe to say that when either creating and/or viewing a work of art, our initial sensory response is to FEEL it. Understanding and appreciating the creative process, the emotional state of mind, and color selection follow. But HEAR? Allow me to indulge and share with you.

In March I attended a concert performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. This particular concert was entitled Portrait in Seven Shades with music composed by Ted Nash . It tells a story about seven painters; not through words but through music. The paintings were not displayed as a backdrop so we had to visualize on our own as we listened and heard Mr. Nash's describe his process and musical interpretation and inspiration. I bought the CD! and had it autographed.

I am also pleased and relieved to say that my funk is starting to lift and the wind in my creative sails is back. Music helps.

When Priorities Shift.....

and reality checks in:

I have been disconnected from my art these past couple weeks. I barely painted.Thought about it a lot though. I attempted blogging only to find myself revising and saving mucho drafts. Didn't want to commit to or advertise those thoughts. My artistic passion has ebbed for the moment and it feels terrible.

I can attribute some of it to a main shift in priorities. I started a new job last month which is great. With that comes news hours, new procedures, learning and adjusting to new routines and regimens. This, at the present moment, is my main source of income.

The other is ego interference. My goal is to be a full time artist. The reality is I'm not. I need the wind back in my sails and SALES to achieve that goal and vision. I admit I haven't been as aggressive marketing as I used to be and definitely SHOULD be. I am in the process of changing my work and ideas, assessing what worked, what didn't and what I need to do to make new things happen. I am confident it will come together and determined to make it happen.

In the meantime, I'll feel what I'm feeling and do what I need to do. Reality checks are good and necessary. Biweekly paychecks are great. Admitting where I am right now is uncomfortable and humbling.

It is important to express yourself.....provided the feelings are real and taken from your own experience.
This will be a completed post. Besides, I used up my draft allowance for April.

I have just started my new job, departed the other and am very happy. I can now concentrate and delve more into the business of art. Coming up with new ideas, experimenting with new mediums, becoming less critical of my work- past, present and future, and marketing are my areas of focus and attention right now.

I am fortunate that I live in a culturally rich city when it comes to the arts. I am guilty of taking it for granted at times. I don't partake of everything I would like to but the venues I do to attend, I leave feel nourished and enriched on many levels. When I need inspiration and/or counsel, I can find it locally. And I did recently. The writing was on the wall.

The Art Institute of Chicago is currently showing an exhibit of Henri Matisse's work from 1913 to 1917 entitled Radical Invention. I went to see it and after viewing, a creative weight was lifted. Not only was I inspired by his work but liberated by his process! Matisse was quite progressive. He recycled. Several paintings that appear in the YouTube video were included in this exhibit. I would like to share a few paraphrased writings on the wall with you:

Matisse would reuse compositions in an effort to pare down forms to their most pure and meaningful state. He found great creative potential in reusing subjects.
Reworking an already familiar subject could free him to focus on other issues pursuing the essence of form, a still simpler means of making or moving a piece in a whole new direction.
The challenge in reworking a familiar subject was the preservation of the original feeling or expression as Matisse called it. It took on a greater improvisational and inspirational role.

Thanks to Henri Matisse, I can and will revisit and reinvent my earlier designs and work, explore new possibilities with them rather than totally discard, abandon or classify as old. Very liberating.

Getting in the Game

The waiting is over. My colorful mind is no longer spinning in circles. I will now share my new beginnings.

I am soon leaving my current job surrounded by lots of art and challenging clientele for a new location within the same industry-hospitality. I don't have to take on a third job that I don't want so I can continue making art.

I am also going to be a contributing writer/blogger for artsavvy.com

I now have a brand new laptop computer!! No longer will I feel like the artist left behind because of my outdated software and technological handicaps. No more excuses. No more holding back.

I am dedicating more of myself to creating and marketing my art.

Alright, so what exactly changed? Where did this new fire, or agni in Sanskrit, in my belly come? Was it:

Watching the Olympics? Seeing and hearing about the athlete's hours, months and years of training, sacrifice, attitude, visualization techniques? The medal ceremonies?

Watching and listening to the Oscars last weekend and hearing two winners accept their Academy awards:

Mo'nique was asked if she ever envisioned herself winning an Academy award and

her response was a resounding YES! "Why get in the game if you don't imagine it?"
and

Peter Doctor's acceptance speech for the movie "UP" on the inherent value
and importance of being creative and making art: "It's not a waste of time."

Getting my taxes done and knowing going in that these past 3 years were not my best, that I was closing in on my window to show a profit like I had before or otherwise risk being classified as "hobby."

I believe the fire in my belly just needed to be fanned some more. It's game time. Whatever it takes......

I am presently in a state of wait. Anxiously and eagerly waiting to hear about several wonderful new beginnings. As soon as I have definite answers, you will read it here first. Winter Whine-ter

I love the natural color of these thin handpainted bangles. I wear them! I sell them! Seeing these same shades on the streets and sidewalks of Chicago in the likes of dirty snow and gray sky and my affection fades. I've got the blahs. I am ready for a new season. Just a few more weeks to go.

Until then, I'll just retreat to The Bubble and make sure I continue to fill and surround myself with positive things and productive thoughts. It's not like I don't have anything to do. I do. It was almost a year ago in a post that I was feeling the exact same way. I learned to create my Bubble after reading Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit. I think I'll visit it again to get me through the Winter whining.

Loving Artistic Passion

Enough about risk taking, online marketing and networking and creative blocks.....for now. Phew. Write about taking a load off! YOU and me both.

It's Valentines Day. A time to show and share artistic passion.... with music. C'mon, keeping this is a wholesome art post. The Artist: Keith Jarrett - solo. I had the incredible great fortune to see him perform again live two nights ago. Totally improvisational. Powerfully eerie and positively mesmerizing to watch and hear. More about that later.I am highlighting a much earlier version of SOTR on youtube to show a morsel of his expressive passion. He performed this during for his third and final encore that night:

I LOVE seeing artists of every medium living and performing their passion. Even more when they get to make a living at it! I love witnessing their process. I occasionally get green with envy.Watching Keith Jarrett was witnessing a genius the likes I had really not felt before.

In between one of his improvisational improvs, he digressed and entertainingly divulged to the hundreds in the audience his process: "Ya ever wonder I how I do this? It's not drugs." That's for sure.

No sooner do I write about about risk taking and I'm tested. The instigators: a quote, a 15 minute rule, and a supplemental job opportunity.

Some background info:
Things have slowed a bit these past couple months at my steadily fluctuating paycheck job, along with art sales. I love having the flexibility that this job affords me and it helps to be surrounded by art, art curators, and interesting people. I do have some commissioned orders due in the Spring. However, this increasingly reversal trend of my income is unsettling. So I started looking and applying for additional part-time work that will still provide the flexibility to create and market my art.

A hiring opportunity presented itself last week which I was excited about until I heard my hours were all Fri-Mon PM hours. I am an AM working person and AM/PM creative. I love painting at night. Combine those hours with my already existing schedule and that would leave me with little time to create, DO EVERYTHING I need to do to grow, or even have a modicum of a social life. But it is $$-not much but it's still welcome $$.

Something just doesn't feel right. I can continue doing MORE of WHAT I am doing, which I don't want to, or REALLY REALLY RISK WHO I CAN BE, which is a seriously committed and successful artist. With a third job, I would be procrastinating my goals even further. What it really boils down to is money and playing it safe or going for it with more faith and conviction. There is ABSOLUTELY no right or wrong. Just gut and intuitive instinct.

Enter the Risk Instigators:

Instigator #1: One of my co-workers is a fantastic jewelry artist, who like me, is reinventing her professional direction. She is weaning her artistic talent to study and pursue her new passion in urban planning as I delve more into art. We talk and share. Neither one of us is doing exactly WHAT we want full time but it works and we are grateful to have it. She is responsible for igniting the first phase of this particular risk thought process. She sent the Mark Twain quote that appears at the top of this post. Yeah Robin!!

Instigator #2 : Alyson Stanfield's Art Marketing Action newsletter/blog discussed devoting at least 15 minutes a day to stay connected to your art in some way. "If you don't, you are telling yourself and everyone in your life that making art is your lowest priority." Oh no. That is what I am saying, doing and feeling and that isn't right. I didn't want my bluff to be called. I took the risk test. I summoned my left brain. I evaluated and re-evaluated EVERYTHING. I declined the third job. The hours of the third job made me realize HOW much I really want to create art and NEED IT. I even thanked the prospective employer for that.

The result: I feel more motivated, excited, and determined.

Yes, I want to be a remembered artist. I admit it. I have my risk work cut out for me- personally, professionally, financially and artistically speaking- to positively and successfully achieve that. I know and can confidently take the WHY risk. It's the HOW, WHEN, and WHERE risks that continue to test and challenge me. They are not stopping me. They're just very uncomfortable, questionable and sometimes most inconvenient. Which is exactly Hazel Dooney's point and WHY her posted tweet got me. As her tweets tend to do quite frequently.

Since the new year and decade are still young ( note: I, on the other hand, can not make that claim and it's not worth taking that risk) I officially proclaim and renew my commitment to taking RISKS. I now gently place my bracelets into the proverbial ring, see how they stack up, along with ALL my other creations, possibilities and dreams, and remember WHY. Why not. Care to join me?
